San Ignacio Lagoon Cabañas
Fly or drive at your convenience to our newest camp in San Ignacio Lagoon, booking the dates that work best for you. Situated on a lovely expanse of beachfront in a World Heritage site, the property provides easy access to hundreds of gray whales who over-winter here.

The spectacular annual migration of whales to the protected waters of Baja arrives in January each year. Gray whales, the first to arrive, are destined for three shallow lagoons the Pacific coast of Baja. San Ignacio Lagoon, the most remote of the three, lies midway between Magdalena Bay to the south and Scammon's Lagoon to the north. Surrounded by low dunes and mangrove lined estuaries, San Ignacio Lagoon provides a perfect home for Baja's most celebrated and magnificent winter visitors—the gray whales.

In this new program, twice-daily skiff rides deliver you to the whale viewing area, where you'll observe these gentle gray giants rolling, breaching, and tending their young. There's also plenty of down time to use our mountain bikes, or venture onto the salt flats with a friendly guide. You can also relax in the spacious palapa lounge with a book from our natural history library, or enjoy a cold drink from its fully-stocked bar.

Enjoy cocktails around the barbeque as you watch the spectacular sunset and whales passing by.  You’ll be just a few short steps away from your comfortable cabaña, elevated from the sand. Each private cabin has a full or queen-sized bed, hardwood floors, and a sink with running water to enhance your stay.

At Cabañas Camp, we strive to provide a high level of amenities and services while using the most appropriate ecology and technology to honor our commitment to the environment.

Arrive at San Ignacio Lagoon and Cabañas Camp:
A myriad of transport options can deliver you to San Ignacio Lagoo, including:
- A commercial flight to Loreto, with ground transport to the Lagoon
- A private charter flight from San Diego, Tijuana, La Paz, Loreto, or San Jose del Cabo
- A private charter of public bus from San Diego.

We also can provide driving directions if you wish to drive into camp. We can also arrange private flights or ground transportation from anywhere in Baja. If you fly your own plane, you can land at the Lagoon’s landing strip, where we will pick you up and transfer you to the camp. Once there, our guide will give you an orientation and help you choose a cabaña. You'll be ready to begin your adventure in no time!

Depending on your time of arrival, you may experience your first whale watching excursion today. If not, you'll have time to relax and explore the surroundings or comb the beach before happy hour. Afterwards, you'll savor a delicious dinner in the palapa lounge's dining area, where meals are freshly prepared and served. (L/D)

Days in San Ignacio Lagoon:
A hearty breakfast is provided in the dining area each morning. Whale watching excursions begin with a short 15-minute skiff ride into the whale viewing area of San Ignacio Lagoon. There, for approximately 90 minutes, you will observe the gray whales spy hopping, breaching and nurturing their young. Your experienced guide and skiff driver will point out the many behaviors you will see.

The morning excursion will be followed by lunch, and time to enjoy a short walk along the beach, or a visit to the nearby salt flats led by an experienced and friendly guide. Adventurous travelers may want to discover Baja's least known resource--its dirt roads! The best way to see them is on one of our mountain bikes; stable, wide tires and gears that are easy to shift will find you enjoying terrain that is ideal for biking. A return to the whale viewing area in the early afternoon will give you another opportunity to spot more gray whales and their calves. Following the two whale watching excursions it will be time to relax before our daily happy hour and a buffet-style dinner. Pick up a book in our natural history library or comb the beach for interesting and unusual shells. After dinner, one of our naturalist guides will present a talk about the Baja Peninsula, its local people and the marine wildlife in the Lagoon.  Be sure to take advantage of the amazing star-gazing while you are here, too. (B/L/D daily)
