San Ignacio Gray Whales + Sea of Cortez Day Adventures
Baja California adventure tours: wildlife meets wild luxury
Whale migration season — January to April — is one of the most extraordinary times to be in Mexico, and our Baja California adventure tours are built to make the most of every moment.
Humpback whales off Cabo. Daily explorations in the Sea of Cortez. Gray whales in San Ignacio Lagoon. This is Baja at its most wild and most varied.
You’ll start in Cabo San Lucas with a guided whale watching trip before heading north to explore La Paz — one of the most vibrant and charming towns in Mexico — for four nights of daily expeditions:
- Explore UNESCO Isla Espíritu Santo & snorkelling with sea lions
- Panga-supported kayaking through the mangroves with beach lunch, catering to all fitness and experience levels
- Balandra Beach by panga — one of the most beautiful beaches in Mexico — with paddleboards, kayaks, and more sea lions
From there, a private sightseeing flight over the Baja Peninsula delivers you to San Ignacio Lagoon: the final chapter of this expedition with the most extraordinary wildlife experience on Earth.
Gray whales return every winter to give birth in the warm shallows, and some will approach small pangas out of pure curiosity. Sometimes for a closer look. Sometimes, to invite a gentle touch.
These are wild animals in a wild place, which means no encounters are guaranteed. You can’t plan for it. That’s the thing that makes it all the more remarkable.
San Ignacio Gray Whales + Sea of Cortez Day Adventures
Wildlife of the Sea of Cortez & San Ignacio Lagoon
Cabo San Lucas
Your trip opens with humpback whales — the acrobats of the whale world. Cabo San Lucas is one of the best places to encounter them, with frequent breaches, tail slaps, and pec-fin displays within close range of the boat. The Pacific waters off Cabo also attract bottlenose and common dolphins year-round.
Sea of Cortez
Recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Isla Espíritu Santo is the gem of Baja California Sur. Counted among the most beautiful islands in the Sea of Cortez, it has dramatic volcanic cliffs that tumble down to white sand beaches and crystal-clear water. And below the surface? Something even more spectacular awaits.
The island’s unique position, surrounded by sandy bays, rocky reefs, mangroves, and deep open-water channels, creates the perfect conditions for an extraordinary concentration of marine life. Nearly 40% of the world’s marine mammal species call these waters home.
The sea lion colony at Los Islotes, off the northern tip of the archipelago, is one of the island’s most beloved highlights — playful, curious, and utterly unforgettable. Keep an eye out for dolphins riding the bow wave, and sea turtles cruising in the shallows. Just off the coast near Balandra Beach, the smaller San Rafaelito colony — around 80 sea lions on a rocky islet — is also well worth a visit.
San Ignacio Lagoon and gray whales
One of the most important gray whale nurseries in the world, San Ignacio Lagoon, draws Eastern Pacific gray whales home every winter to mate and give birth. It’s often called “whale central” since over a thousand whales have been recorded passing through in a single season.
Some individuals, including mother-calf pairs, approach our small boats, providing opportunities for close-up encounters.
Trust us, looking a 40-ton whale in the eye is truly unforgettable. What makes these moments so special is that they can never be guaranteed.
Respectful marine life encounters
Expert naturalist guides lead all wildlife experiences and operate in full compliance with Mexican marine wildlife regulations — ensuring every encounter is safe, respectful, and deeply memorable.
Possible wildlife sightings:
- California sea lions
- Turtles
- Dolphins
- Migratory and resident birds
- Vibrant reef fish
- Coyotes
- Gray whales
- And more!

Your complete Baja experience
Starts with your personal naturalist-guided humpback whale watching adventure in Cabo. Then transfer to La Paz for a 4 nights hotel stay in the central part of town, close by the Malecón, with a different naturalist led adventure over the coming days.
Every day we’ll head out on a different adventure, including voyaging out to explore UNESCO Isla Espíritu Santo & snorkelling with sea lions and exploring the island. Another day we will have the perfect kayak adventure for all ages, experience and fitness levels. As much or as little paddling as you like. Exploring the mangroves, enjoy a beach lunch, and panga supported. Our panga visit to the famous, highly ‘Instagrammable’ Balandra Beach will be unforgettable. We’ll be bringing a beach lunch, kayaks, and paddle boards with us.
Morning transfer to the La Paz airport for a one hour and 40-minute flight directly to the airstrip at San Ignacio lagoon for the most extraordinary whale interaction on the planet. We will be landing on a 4,000-ft airstrip just 5 minutes from camp, where our happy, smiling staff will welcome you with trays of champagne. From there, transfer by suburban to camp for brunch, briefing, and then head out for the first of your whale encounters. After an exciting afternoon, unwind with a cocktail hour, watching the sunset around a campfire, dinner and an evening presentation by your naturalist. A game of pool and specialty drinks in our bar tent is always a great way to finish the day before wandering back to your tent under the magnificent Mexican stars.
All operators in the lagoon work together to maximize guest experience while ensuring no negative impact on the whales. For this reason, all whale encounters are in a small defined area of the lagoon with pangas taking turns entering the restricted area for a maximum of 90 minutes. The timing on this is worked out between the operators which means that we abide by scheduled departure times. For this reason, unfortunately, we can’t just send a panga out to go whale watching whenever our guests want.
Option 1: 7 am breakfast after watching the sunrise over the sierras and then head out at 7:45 am for several whale watching encounters.
Option 2: Sleep in and relax. Breakfast when you are ready. One more whale watching encounter at 2 pm.
After lunch, enjoy another whale watching encounter in the afternoon. Or as long as the weather cooperates, enjoy kayaking or paddleboarding the mangroves across the lagoon or a leisurely walk, mountain biking, hiking, and bird watching with one of our naturalists or just kicking back, and relaxing. Cocktail hour, sunset viewing, making new friends around one of our fire pits, pickle ball or a game of billiards and an evening presentation by a naturalist are all fine ways to finish off your day in camp.
Early breakfast. One more whale watching encounter (always weather dependent) and then the beautiful flight back to SJD Los Cabos. Arriving 12:30 PM. If you are flying home this day, we recommend not booking a flight departure before 2:45 PM. Otherwise transfer back to SeeCreatures Cabo and more adventure!
