OVERVIEW

Whale watching in Baja meets sailing the Sea of Cortez

This is the whale experience of a lifetime — a 10-day odyssey through Baja California Sur that takes you from the wildlife-rich waters of the Sea of Cortez to the most intimate whale encounters on Earth at San Ignacio Lagoon.

Your journey begins aboard Mango Wind, a 45-foot sailing catamaran that becomes your floating home as you sail from La Paz to Loreto. Every winter and spring, these waters transform into the planet’s greatest concentration of whale species — a migration spectacle unlike anywhere else on Earth.

Blue whale mother-calf pairs glide through the protected waters of Loreto Bay National Park. These gentle giants — the largest animals ever to have lived — arrive each winter following dense swarms of krill. Fin whales, the world’s second-largest species, cruise alongside them. Then come the humpbacks, breaching and tail-slapping in displays that never get old. Dolphins race the bow, sea lions play in the shallows, and mobula rays start to gather in huge numbers.

Between wildlife encounters, you can paddle along untouched coastlines with kayaks and paddleboards, and watch golden sunsets from the deck.

For the finale, a private sightseeing flight takes you to San Ignacio Lagoon for 3 nights of luxury glamping in a remote, zero-footprint camp on the lagoon shore for the world’s most extraordinary whale encounters. A place where gray whales are known to voluntarily approach small boats, coming eye-to-eye with people and sometimes inviting a gentle touch.

Wildlife

World-class wildlife

This trip is designed around two of the ocean’s most iconic whales: blue whales in the Sea of Cortez and gray whales at San Ignacio Lagoon.

Blue Whales are the main attraction in the Sea of Cortez from January through April, with peak sightings in February and March. The largest animals ever to have lived on Earth, they arrive following massive swarms of krill, with mother-calf pairs regularly spotted in the protected waters of Loreto Bay National Park.

Fin whales — the world’s second-largest species — cruise the same waters, often appearing alongside blues. Humpback whales bring the acrobatics, breaching and tail-slapping throughout winter and spring. The whale roster continues with pilot whales, sperm whales, and Bryde’s whales making regular appearances, plus possible sightings of orcas.

Beyond the giants, dolphins travel in massive superpods, and sea lions prove to be the trip’s unexpected crowd-pleasers with their curious, playful nature. From mid-March onwards, mobula rays gather in spectacular aggregations — often numbering over 10,000 individuals. Whale sharks may also appear (their season runs October through April), along with sea turtles and seabirds including blue-footed boobies and pelicans.

The finale at San Ignacio Lagoon belongs to the gray whales. From January through April, they migrate here to mate, give birth, and raise calves in the sheltered shallows. Some individuals are unusually friendly, approaching pangas out of pure curiosity — especially young calves with their watchful mothers nearby.

San Ignacio Whale watching Itinerary for San Ignacio + Sailing

An optional complimentary naturalist-guided humpback whale watching adventure is available in the morning off Cabo San Lucas (pre-registration required).

Meet at SeeCreatures Cabo and depart at 16:30 for La Paz. Welcome aboard Mango Wind, our 45 ft sailing catamaran — settle in with drinks as we get underway and set sail into the Sea of Cortez.

Each day is yours to spend as you please while we follow the latest reports of big animal activity. We suggest an early breakfast followed by a morning ocean safari — keeping a lookout for everything from blue whales to mega-pods of dolphins and more. Lunch and sailing aboard. Afternoons are yours — relax on deck, kayak, paddleboard, swim, snorkel, take a beach walk or hike, or head out for another ocean safari. Late afternoon cocktails, appetizers, and another sail. Dinner under the Mexican night sky, ablaze with stars.

Morning transfer to the La Paz airport for a one hour and 40-minute flight directly to the airstrip at San Ignacio lagoon for the most extraordinary whale interaction on the planet. We will be landing on a 4,000-ft airstrip just 5 minutes from camp, where our happy, smiling staff will welcome you with trays of champagne. From there, transfer by suburban to camp for brunch, briefing, and then head out for the first of your whale encounters. After an exciting afternoon, unwind with a cocktail hour, watching the sunset around a campfire, dinner and an evening presentation by your naturalist. A game of pool and specialty drinks in our bar tent is always a great way to finish the day before wandering back to your tent under the magnificent Mexican stars.

All operators in the lagoon work together to maximize guest experience while ensuring no negative impact on the whales. For this reason, all whale encounters are in a small defined area of the lagoon with pangas taking turns entering the restricted area for a maximum of 90 minutes. The timing on this is worked out between the operators which means that we abide by scheduled departure times. For this reason, unfortunately, we can’t just send a panga out to go whale watching whenever our guests want.

Option 1: 7 am breakfast after watching the sunrise over the sierras and then head out at 7:45 am for several whale watching encounters.

Option 2: Sleep in and relax. Breakfast when you are ready. One more whale watching encounter at 2 pm.

After lunch, enjoy another whale watching encounter in the afternoon. Or as long as the weather cooperates, enjoy kayaking or paddleboarding the mangroves across the lagoon or a leisurely walk, mountain biking, hiking, and bird watching with one of our naturalists or just kicking back, and relaxing. Cocktail hour, sunset viewing, making new friends around one of our fire pits, pickle ball or a game of billiards and an evening presentation by a naturalist are all fine ways to finish off your day in camp.

Early breakfast. One more whale watching encounter (always weather dependent) and then the beautiful flight back to SJD Los Cabos. Arriving 12:30 PM. If you are flying home this day, we recommend not booking a flight departure before 2:45 PM. Otherwise transfer back to SeeCreatures Cabo and more adventure!
