Adventure Sailing & Blue Whales
Sailing & whale watching in the Sea of Cortez
Sail into one of the greatest wildlife spectacles on Earth — where the Sea of Cortez comes alive with whales.
From mid-February through March, these waters become a gathering place for migrating giants and resident species alike, creating the highest concentration of whale species found anywhere on the planet.
You’ll spend a week immersed in this ever-changing seascape aboard Mango Wind, a 45-foot sailing catamaran. Fully equipped with kayaks, paddleboards, and a fast boat for daily ocean safaris, your floating home carries you from La Paz to Loreto through some of the most productive marine habitats in the world. Look out for blue whale mother-calf pairs in the protected waters around Loreto Bay National Park. These gentle giants — the largest animals ever to have lived on Earth — arrive each winter, following dense swarms of krill into this nutrient-rich sea. Fin whales, the world’s second-largest animal, are often spotted here, too.
Then come the humpbacks — acrobatic crowd-pleasers known for breaching, tail slapping, and incredible songs that carry for miles underwater. They bring an energy that is both thrilling and deeply moving. But it’s not all about whales. Dolphins race the bow, sea lions twirl through the shallows, and mobula rays gather in huge numbers. And, with a bit of luck, you may encounter whale sharks or orcas.
Golden sunsets, paddling along untouched coastlines, and nights under star-filled skies keep you far from the noise of the outside world. This is not just a whale watching trip — it’s a chance to connect with the ocean, with nature, with something far bigger than yourself.
Adventure Sailing & Blue Whales
The crossroads of major whale migration routes
The Sea of Cortez sits at the crossroads of major whale migration routes, making Baja California Sur a premier whale watching destination.
The winter whale convergence
From January through April, whales converge here in extraordinary numbers. Beyond the blue whales, fin whales, and humpbacks you might encounter on our route, these waters also draw sperm, pilot, and Bryde’s whales. With abundant plankton and prey, some whale populations — particularly fin and sperm whales — have abandoned migration altogether and made this their permanent home.
Dolphins, rays & gentle giants
Picture super-pods of common dolphins stretching to the horizon and playful bottlenose dolphins riding the bow wave alongside the boat. Huge schools of mobula rays, leaping in synchronized displays.
At Isla Espíritu Santo, curious sea lion pups approach snorkelers in one of the most interactive marine encounters. Whale sharks — the world’s largest fish — cruise these waters from October to April, feeding on the plankton blooms that make this sea so productive.
Countless fish and seabirds
Five of the world’s seven sea turtle species call these waters home, while nearly 900 species of fish create an underwater kaleidoscope — 77 of them found nowhere else on the planet.
Above the surface, frigatebirds soar effortlessly on rising thermals, blue-footed boobies plunge-dive with precision, and pelicans glide low, skimming the waves.
Respectful marine life encounters
Expert naturalist guides lead all wildlife experiences and operate in full compliance with Mexican marine wildlife regulations — ensuring every encounter is safe, respectful, and deeply memorable.
