Imagine snorkelling with ten thousand mobula rays or interacting with orcas in the beautiful Sea of Cortez… This is exactly what we do from March through July every year with our expedition yacht, 45-ft sailing catamaran, and beach camp on Isla Espiritu Santo. Filmmaker Carlos Guana, whose work has appeared on National Geographic, Discovery Channel, and BBC, shot this dramatic film from the Nautilus Gallant Lady of orcas hunting mobula rays trying to escape. Viewer warning, this is Mother Nature at work.
You never quite know how orca trips will go. It’s definitely not Disneyland! This is adventure pure and simple and involves search time and in-water time. Our dedicated spotter airplane is our eye in the sky, and it improves the odds considerably. When we are on the mobulas and or orcas, it can be the experience of a lifetime. The odds are pretty darned good, about 75%. We had one trip in 2024 with no orcas, but then the following week, we encountered orcas 5 days in a row! We are convinced there are now at least 3 pods of orcas that are resident year-round in the Sea of Cortez—not just around La Ventana, but further north as well. We just had orcas on September 19th, and earlier this week too.
