A Life-Changing Encounter: Baja Expeditions Staff Visit San Ignacio Lagoon
2025-04-16

After a bustling whale-watching season at San Ignacio Lagoon, some of our Baja Expeditions office team had the chance to step away from the desk and immerse themselves in the magic our guests experience every year. From breathtaking grey whale encounters to cozy glamping tents and unforgettable meals, here’s what our team had to say about their time at the lagoon.
“A Moment of Magic and Peace” – Marlene
My trip to San Ignacio Lagoon is something I’ll never forget. It was the perfect mix of calm and excitement. The place itself is absolutely beautiful—peaceful waters, wide open skies, and sunsets that felt like therapy. It’s one of those rare places that helps you slow down and truly reconnect with yourself.
But the real highlight, without a doubt, was seeing the whales. Even though there weren’t tons of them around, the few we saw made the experience completely worth it. We watched a few moms with their calves, and one baby whale was especially playful—splashing around, flipping its tail, breaching, and even popping its head out of the water like it was curious about us. It was such a magical and unforgettable moment.
My glamping tent was cozy and comfortable—exactly the right balance between comfort and being immersed in nature. I cherished the silence, the serenity, the star-filled skies, and the warmth of the friendly staff. Definitely one of those experiences I’ll carry with me forever.
“Breathtaking Scenery, Delicious Food” – Gisela
My stay at the camp was brief, but truly an unforgettable experience. The landing gave me a little scare at first, but the warm welcome from the entire staff immediately put me at ease.
My first impression upon arriving at the camp was simply wow—it’s spacious and beautifully located right next to the lagoon, absolutely breathtaking. Every meal and snack I tried was delicious, with the dinner standing out as especially memorable (the portions were so generous I couldn’t quite finish mine!).
The casita we stayed in was charming and very comfortable—I had one of the best nights’ sleep I’ve had in a while. Although there was no signal or internet, which meant I had to pause some pending tasks and temporarily disconnect from my usual contact with my children, it also offered a rare opportunity to fully immerse myself in the experience. In the end, that digital break made the stay even more special.”
Thank you so much for the opportunity to be part of this. It’s definitely an experience I’ll recommend to everyone—I believe it deserves a spot on every bucket list.
“Close Encounters and Warm Cookies” – Denisse
My experience at San Ignacio Lagoon was truly beautiful!
The whale watching was magical. When momma and her baby whale approached the boat, it was such an exciting moment! They were playful, swimming near the motor and suddenly appearing right beside us. I had several close encounters with them—you could even see their eyes watching us. My fellow travelers on the panga were shouting with joy, and the families were absolutely thrilled with the experience.
The food was delicious — there was always a different menu for each meal. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner were full of surprises, and dinner always ended with dessert. The muffins they baked and the chocolate chip cookies were amazing!
There are three whale watching excursions per day, each one just as exciting as the last, giving you plenty of opportunities to see the whales up close. During cocktail hour, I bought a margarita that was really good, and I loved the snacks they served at the bar — one day they had wings, and honestly, the food overall was excellent.
I stayed in a glamping tent, which was super comfortable. The amenities were lovely, and the heated blanket you plug in is such a great touch — it works perfectly. Everything was incredibly clean. The guides and hosts were always kind, helpful, and full of good energy.

“A Soul-Nourishing Journey” – Anayency
It fills me with joy and gratitude to thank not only each and every person who makes my journey to San Ignacio such a comforting and soul-nourishing experience from start to finish, but also those who lead this beautiful endeavor. Behind it all is a heartfelt effort, from the planning and preparation to the care in every detail, the warm attention, and the flawless execution—all so that our connection with nature becomes something truly magical and unforgettable.
“The Best Days Ever Lived” – Dulce
The best experience of all. The San Ignacio camp is and will be a UNIQUE experience where both the beauty of the sea and the great diversity of its desert are combined.
The experience begins when you fly to reach this wonderful place, where from minute one everyone is willing to create the best days for guests. It is incredible how the comforts are—from hot water to electricity in each of the corners of this camp.
The food is amazing, every day is a gastronomic treat. The guides who are attentive to every need, the captains of the pangas who make each sighting unique, and always looking for the safety of each one of us.
The opportunity to see these mammals and their young, and above all to have that connection with them—by touching them and looking them in the eye—is unique. In my experience, the memory of the best days ever lived until today remains.
Thanks to the entire team and our president for allowing us to live this experience.
