San Ignacio Gray Whale Season Is Here!

Gray Whale Watching at San Ignacio Lagoon, Mexico

The 2026 San Ignacio gray whale watching season is here! New Year. New Life!

The gray whale camp at Baja Expeditions is officially open, and San Ignacio Lagoon has welcomed us in with open arms — and plenty of whales.

From day one, it’s been one of those starts you hope for but never take for granted. Calm conditions, quiet mornings, and whales everywhere. We’ve spent the vast majority of our time with whales — not searching, not waiting — just sharing the lagoon with these gentle giants in their winter nursery.

San Ignacio Gray Whale Watching: A Lagoon Full of Life

Crew member Eline joined us for opening week, and her first days on the water captured exactly why this place is so special:

What impressed me most was learning that the calf we saw on day two was only a few weeks old, born right here inside the lagoon. Being out on the water, we were with whales about 95% of the time — the other 5% was navigation. They were just always there.

… I knew very little about gray whales before this trip, and after just a few days, I feel much closer to the species 🤍”

by Eline, Crew Member, January 2026

Encounters so far have included cruising grays, curious spy-hops, thrilling close-ups, and momma whales nursing their calves. Every day brings long, peaceful moments when the lagoon feels like it belongs to us alone — guided by captains and naturalists whose knowledge gives every moment meaning.

Guest Experiences: San Ignacio Gray Whale Expedition

Our early-season guests have felt the magic of Laguna San Ignacio, too:

Wow! So many whales. The naturalists are so well educated. The entire staff caters to every need. The camp runs very fluidly. The meals are top-notch. I would highly recommend this trip to everyone.”

“Our whale watching adventure was a wonderful experience. The camp was very well organized, and the staff and guides were very respectful and talented. I especially appreciated the naturalists and their knowledge and calm demeanor.”

There’s still time to join us

With a strong early showing of whales — including newborn calves — the season is shaping up beautifully. If you’ve been on the fence, this might be your sign.

We’d love to welcome you to San Ignacio, share a few days on the water, and raise a glass together as the sun drops behind the dunes.

See you at camp,
Mike & the Baja Expeditions Crew
