Captain’s Noon Reports – Mango Wind– 2023-05-19

The afternoon was a bit slow with the whales and dolphins but the mobulas did make it up. Guests were in the water at Punta Arenas for over an hour. They returned to the boat at about 18.00 to the MW excited and happy. Water Temp 70c and the visibility is 15/20ft.  The weather has been blowing a little from the NE at about 10/15knts.

We anchor at Bahia de los Muertos, with not much wind in the evening. Had some strong wind gusts at about 11.00 pm to 3.00 AM but all was good where we anchor.

This morning the guests wanted to leave at 6.30 to see what they could find and as they left, the mobulas were going crazy hopping all over. MW headed out to see what we could find and saw some school of dolphins.

At the same time, the spotter plane contacted us and spotted a Humpback whale. We coordinated with it and headed toward the position. Found the single Humpback so we followed it and had some good close-up encounters. We hung around for about 1 hour by ourselves until we saw pangas coming, so we left after they came.
